Marina, Miyagi (& Эндшпиль) and Munisa

Here are two artists and one rap duo that I'm currently obsessed with.

Marina and the Diamonds

This pop genius has just released her fourth album. An observer of human behavior, Marina writes poignant lyrics about heartbreak, future career, human nature and modern culture. She encompasses several genres like rock in “Bubblegum Bitch”, pop like in “Blue” and alternative like in “Mowgli’s Road”. She is also an excellent album artist; I highly recommend checking out “Electra Heart” and “Froot”. Here are my five favorite songs:

Blue

Bubblegum Bitch

Oh No!

Can’t Pin Me Down

To Be Human

Miyagi & Эндшпиль

This rap duo from the Caucuses is an excellent introduction to the growing Russian hip-hop scene. Miyagi and Эндшпиль’s rap skills blend well together; the mix of Russian and English lyrics allow American and Russian listeners to appreciate their flow.  “I Got Love” will make you dance while “Фея” will make you fall in love. Here are my five favorite songs:

I Got Love

Фея (Fairy)

Фая (Fire)

Я хочу любить (I want to love)

Люби меня (Love Me)

Munisa Rizayeva

Sometimes referred to as “Uzbek Lady GaGa”, Munisa Rizayeva is the most interesting Uzbek pop star to watch because her blending of genres, creative costumes and imaginative music videos. She plays attention to Uzbek musical traditions like sampling the famous Khorezm song, “Lazgi”, in “Lol Qolaman” to traditional Uzbek drumming in “Sacramento” while also incorporating elements from other genres like Spanish guitars and lyrics in “Hollywood” and Sacramento”. Here are my five favorite songs:

Bor Yogi Yo'q (Yes or No)

Sacramento

Qop-Qora (Very Black)

Ayt Nega (Say Why)

Dema- Dema (Don’t Say)
